What's better than a great burger at an outdoor party? Nothing! However, there is a way to but a delicious healthy twist to the traditional beef burger patty . . . ground turkey.

Ground turkey is at least 97% lean compared to ground beef which is typically 70-85% lean. This means a quarter pound patty will only have about 5 grams of fat compared to 12 grams. By cutting back the amount of fat it makes for a heart healthy alternative to an American Favorite.

This weekend I cooked up these burgers for an early birthday celebration for my mom and they were a great hit. Since everyone has different food preferences, providing a variety of burger toppings is ideal for a family gathering. Some topping ideas include: cheddar cheese, cream cheese, bleu cheese, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, avocado, sprouts, onions, salsa, ketchup, and mayo.

Zesty Turkey Burgers

Yield: 4 burgers (1/4 lb each)

Ingredients:

1 lb 97% lean ground turkey

2 T orange juice

1/4 t orange zest

1/2 t minced ginger

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 C chopped cilantro

1 t ground pepper

1 t salt

4 hamburger buns of your choice (or lettuce leaves for Protein Style)

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together all the ingredients until thoroughly combined. Let rest for a minimum of 30 minutes to let the flavors fully develop.

  2. Split the ground turkey mixture into 4 balls and form into patties about the size of your desired buns.

  3. Heat a large sauce pan or griddle over medium heat.

  4. Cook the patties over medium heat for 5-7 minutes on each side.

*Tip: Toast buns on pan with light butter for extra flavor

Serve cooked Zesty Turkey Burger patties on toasted bun or wrapped in a lettuce leaf for a low-carb (protein style) option. Serve with everyones favorite toppings and let everyone build their own burger for a fun and healthy dinner! These burgers also go great with Sweet Potato Fries, Coleslaw, Mixed Green Salad, Potato Salad and MORE.
